Ethiopian Wedding traditions
Telosh ~ Held about two days before the wedding at the bride’s family home. The groom’s family presents gifts, often including the wedding dress and jewelry. Guests then give their gifts and share a meal.
Pickup of the Bride ~ On the wedding day, the groom arrives at the bride’s home. There is a playful door ritual with singing before he is welcomed in. He presents flowers to the bride, then the families process to the ceremony.
Knee Kissing ~ Knee Kissing is a moment of respect and blessing that happens at the very end of the night as the couple exits. After the final dance and farewells, the MC invites grandparents and parents to be seated near the exit. The couple approaches, bows, and lightly kisses the elders’ knees, or receives a hand blessing if preferred. Blessings are given in order, grandparents first, then parents and senior elders.
Meles ~ A joyful celebration the day after the wedding, usually with close family and friends, where the couple wears traditional attire such as Kaba. Many families include a bread-cutting and a lighthearted naming moment for the bride.
Kelkel ~ A third-day gathering for extended family and those who could not attend earlier events. Parents offer final blessings and well wishes before the couple begins married life.
